NIOPPS Accreditation
Minimum standards for NIOPPS Accreditation
Hospital/company applying for accreditation:
- 24 hour emergency advice service must be available.
- Weight loss results should be monitored and published for each individual establishment/company.
- All staff involved in delivering after care programmes should meet the ‘individual practitioner minimum standards’ as detailed below.
- After care programme to meet NIOPPS minimum standards as detailed below.
- Patients must have access to regular and ‘as necessary’ clinic appointments with a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner.
Individual practitioner minimum standards:
Please note an individual practitioner may apply for sole registration
Essential qualifications:
- Registered nurse (current registration with NMC) or Dietician (current registration with BDA)
- Certified training in the care of bariatric patients
- Certified training in the clinical adjustment of gastric bands
- Qualification in the psychological interventions ( e.g. CBT training, Master Practitioner in obesity, Counseling or Mental Health training/qualifications.)
NIOPPS After Care Programme minimum standards:
- Minimum one year follow up, ideally longer.
- The programme should include:
- Patient education regarding working with the gastric balloon, gastric band or understanding the nature or the surgical procedure that has been undertaken.
- Education regarding basic nutrition
- Advice on appropriate activity
- Motivational techniques
